Black: Song lyrics
Feeble bones took me to a valuable weakness
The songs tone is set from the start very sad a guy trying to be freed from pain
There's no comfort in silence
No real violence in words
There's no comfort in silence
No real violence in words
Metaphors are use to signify a struggle that is not physical but more psychological. A struggling relationship?
So I, sharpened my blade and bowed my head before I ceased and desisted
So I, sharpened my blade and bowed my head before I ceased and desisted
Prepping for a execution although not real, more of metal execution. To withdraw from and stop trying.
And though my stomach was a ball of resistance
I went straight for the course
And though my stomach was a ball of resistance
I went straight for the course
The songs tone is set very serious in a trying time in a mans life. metaphors signifying struggle and giving up are used to convey his despair.
With burns on the backs of my palms
Will I regret my cause? or revel in my thoughts?
Will I regret my cause? or revel in my thoughts?
He is sad to let go, and because he is struggling to let go he is afraid of what people will think of him. He is afraid he will regret giving up.
I'm caught in the winds of remorse
I'm caught in the winds of remorse
Using a weather pattern to describe sadness. He is guilty about something in a relationship.
'Cause everybody knows
'Cause everybody knows
What good is a sword, next to a shotgun
What good is a sword, next to a shotgun
What good is a sword, next to a shotgun
What good is a sword, next to a shotgun
What good is a sword, next to a shotgun
The repetition of words is showing the importance of them. He is referring to himself as the sword and how he will never be good enough as the next guy (shotgun). This is sung in a dreary sense to show the pain he feels.
How did I get stuck in this valiant position
When either I'll survive for an instant
Or cradle the earth?
When either I'll survive for an instant
Or cradle the earth?
He thinks the relationship is brilliant and that the valiant position is him in the relationship. Although he is weary that it will end as soon as its started or however it will last forever in paradise.
My God forsaken, weakened pulse, I knew I had to amend this
Though I never was a force to be reckoned, or
A sight to behold
My God forsaken, weakened pulse, I knew I had to amend this
Though I never was a force to be reckoned, or
A sight to behold
He doesn't look at himself as a god. He knows he isn't in the position/power to alter the world but he wants to fix the relationship. He wants to repair it. Although is it because it was failing or hasn't it even begun. The songs tone is picking up. There are hints of optimism and hope.
With burns…
With burns on the backs of my palms
Will I regret my cause? or revel in my thoughts?
I'm caught in the winds of remorse
Cause everybody knows
Will I regret my cause? or revel in my thoughts?
I'm caught in the winds of remorse
Cause everybody knows
Same bridge repeated but however there is a repeat of the word "Burns". This is drawing attention to scaring of previous relations or it could be for the scarring or the first one. Another interpretation is that the burning could be caused by the relationship and the fact it is not healthy.
What good is a sword, next to a shotgun
What good is a sword, next to a shotgun
What good is a sword, next to a shotgun
What good is a sword, next to a shotgun
What good is a sword, next to a shotgun
Am I biting the bullet alone?
Oh I know that I'd rather be bold
(What good is a sword, next to a shotgun)
And we're biting the bullet alone
Oh I know that I'd rather be bold
(What good is a sword, next to a shotgun)
Am I biting the bullet alone?
Oh I know that I'd rather be bold
(What good is a sword, next to a shotgun)
Oh I know that I'd rather be bold
(What good is a sword, next to a shotgun)
And we're biting the bullet alone
Oh I know that I'd rather be bold
(What good is a sword, next to a shotgun)
Am I biting the bullet alone?
Oh I know that I'd rather be bold
(What good is a sword, next to a shotgun)
Biting the bullet is referring to a straining situation. stopping the bullet with teeth is an impossible task but make easier with more people, two in fact. A relationship. He is struggling as he is alone. When he is referring to being bold it could be for two reasons. One is that he is bold in the way of staying in the relationship against all odds or it could me he was bold in leaving it. The "What good is a sword, next to a shotgun" line is said at the same time as the main lyrics making this part of the song very chaotic. This could signify the fact that him deciding the fate of the relationship is hard and he is struggling to do it. The end of the song is very intense and can be overbearing to listen to but there is a sudden drop at the end with the "next to a shotgun" line that makes it sound like he has given up however there a sense of relief to this line. He is satisfied it's over.
